Beep-Beep, Toot Toot Tour

PORTLAND, OR | MARCH 2019

Club members were treated to a personal tour of the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation Museum in Portland. We headed out from Wood Village and drove through some interesting territory in East Multnomah County, including Blue Lake Park and the Sandy River, before heading into downtown Portland. The Oregon Rail Heritage Center, home of the museum, was developed to house a number of historic train engines including the famous No. 4449—the American Freedom Train that toured the US to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. We learned about the transition of locomotives from wood burning to coal burning to oil burning…fascinating stuff! We had lunch in a 1941 restored Pullman Dining car, a perfect way to conclude our rail experience.
